Earthquake!
I woke up to an earthquake this morning. I don’t live in California. I live in St. Louis, Missouri.
I’ve only felt an earthquake once. A long time ago when I was in college. Then it was so minor I didn’t even know it was an earthquake until that night when it was on the news. This time I knew.
It was 4:37 AM. I woke up to a knocking sound. Groggy, I couldn’t figure out what it was. I thought that maybe my dog was up to no good. Then suddenly, the bed started shaking. It seemed to intensify in waves and lasted about 15 to 20 seconds. Then it was over. That was about a 1/2 hour ago.
On the news they are reporting now. It registered 5.4 and was centered 127 miles east of here in Illinois near the Indiana border. I’m sure Californians would laugh, but it was quite an occurance for this part of the country. Of course, we are near the epicenter of the largest earthquake ever to hit the United States, the New Madrid fault.
The knocking noise? It continued long after we perceived the shaking to stop. It was a small vase with an uneven bottom that was on the glass kitchen table. I had just cut a bunch of dafodils out of our flower beds and put them in water. The surface of the water continued shaking long after we were asake and up.
All is well at least in our home.
